NSW State Vegetation Type Map

Current Extent

The State Vegetation Type Map (SVTM) is a regional-scale map of NSW Plant Community Types. This map represents the current extent of each Plant Community Type, Vegetation Class and Vegetation Formation, across all tenures in NSW. Further, a SVTM map of pre-clearing is also available separately here. This map is updated periodically as part of the Integrated BioNet Vegetation Data program to improve quality and alignment to the NSW vegetation classification hierarchy.

Further information about the mapping methods is available from the State Vegetation Type Mapping Program Page

Current Release C1.1.M1.1 (December 2022)

This patch release implements two minor data changes in the SVTM map. Firstly, in areas not currently mapped as a Plant Community Type, the attribute name ‘Not native vegetation’ has been changed to ‘Not classified’. This change is intended to reduce the perception that a location which has not been classified as a plant community type, does not contain any native vegetation. Many areas in NSW comprise derived and highly modified native vegetation. You will find these attribute values in the following data fields: ‘PCTName’, ‘vegetationClass’, and ‘vegetationFormation’. These attributes occur widely across the state. There is also a geometry linework change for a data error detected around Mudgee Central Tablelands, just west of Eastern New South Wales region. The blocky 5m gridded vector polygon line-work has been updated with the smoother original un-gridded vector polygon line-work. The underlying PCT classification remains unchanged at version C1.1

Release C1.1.M1 (September 2022)

C1.1.M1.1 superseded the previous release C1.1M1 which represented the first state-wide vegetation coverage using the NSW vegetation classification hierarchy, including the revised eastern NSW PCT classification C1.1. The “M1” in the version release number (C1.1.M1), represents the first major release against PCT master list version C1.1 Release C1.1.M1 superseds pre-release versions (v1.1 and v1.1.1) and 7 individual prior regional coverages including: Sydney Metropolitan Area Mapping, SVTM Border Rivers Gwydir – Namoi, SVTM Central West – Lachlan, SVTM Riverina – Murray, SVTM Western, SVTM Central Tablelands, and SVTM Upper Hunter.

Limitations on Use

  • This mapping data may be used as a guide to the occurrence and distribution of Plant Community Types, Vegetation Classes, and Vegetation Formations, before and after clearing.

Users of these maps should note the following issues which will be address in future SVTM versions:

  • PCT attribution errors – corrected as better information becomes available
  • Spatial errors or omissions (eg, gaps and slithers or mapping linework inaccuracies)
  • Eastern NSW PCT classification topologies differ from central and western NSW classification topologies
  • Some PCTs mapped as part of earlier regional coverages have since been discontinued
  • Some PCTs approved in BioNet have not been mapped due to technical issues
  • Spatial and data gaps and discontinuities may occur at the edges of former regional coverages.
  • Pre-clearing coverage for central NSW is not currently available

Data Access

Map data may be downloaded, viewed within the SEED Map Viewer, or accessed via the underlying ArcGIS REST Services or WMS for integration in GIS or business applications.

The Trees Near Me NSW app provides quick access to view the map using a mobile device or desktop. Download the app from Google Play or the App Store, or access the web site at https://treesnearme.app.

Map Data Type

The map is supplied as ESRI Feature Class (Quickview) and 5m GeoTiff Raster, and can be viewed and analysed in most commercial and open-source spatial software packages. If you prefer to use the download package, we supply an ArcGIS v10.4 mxd and/or a layer file for suggested symbology. The raster attributes contain Plant Community Type, Vegetation Class and Vegetation Formation.
