High Ecological Value Waterways and Water Dependent Ecosystems in Wianamatta-South Creek

This is a thematic dataset of high ecological value waterways and water dependent ecosystems for the Wianamatta-South Creek catchment. It brings together 24 indicators being used by the State Government to define high ecological value based on definitions, guidelines and policies under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, Fisheries Management Act 1994 and Water Management Act 2000. An additional 11 indicators were included to recognise known community environmental values and uses of waterways and water dependent ecosystems in the area. The water dependent ecosystems consist of wetlands, and vegetation and fauna that rely on surface or groundwater water sources.

The purpose of the dataset is to identify strategic planning priorities for protecting and improving the health of high ecological value waterways and water dependent ecosystems, which have been recognised as the natural blue grid in strategic land use planning for the Western Parkland City. The priorities can be used as a basis for identifying aquatic biodiversity refugia, stream rehabilitation efforts and setting management targets and/or land use planning controls that would protect or improve the health of the waterways and water dependent ecosystems.

The overall accuracy of the dataset is > 80%, when compared to an independent validation dataset (396 validation sites) made up of field survey data, independent desktop analyses of sites, and the use of existing field survey datasets collated from the BioNet Vegetation Survey database, Blacktown City Council and the Conservation and Sustainability Branch of the Department of Planning and Environment. A technical report* and the accompanying attributes table provides a description of the how the dataset was created and the attributes of the dataset, respectively.
