Title

Tweed Brunswick River catchment Wetlands Inventory

Abstract

The Inventory provides baseline information on the state and extent of wetlands in the above catchments.

The definition of a wetland that was adopted is that defined by the NSW Wetlands Management Policy (NSW Government, 1996 p. 12):

Wetlands are defined as land that is:

  • inundated with water on a temporary or permanent basis;
  • inundated with water that is usually slow moving or stationary;
  • inundated with water that is shallow, and
  • inundated with water that may be fresh, brackish or saline.

The majority of the data was gained from the multi attribute mapping undertaken by DIPNR. This dataset is a land resources inventory created from 1: 25 000 scale aerial photograph interpretation (Hamilton and Short, 1998). Other spatial and cadastral features were also obtained from DLWC. The accuracy of the multi attribute data was tested by comparing the data with previous mapping exercises in the catchment. Truthing was conducted on about 75% of the wetlands mapped in the inventory

A matrix containing the attributes of each of the wetlands mapped was compiled from a combination of information on tenure from the Tweed Shire Council, endangered species survey from NPWS, local information from DIPNR staff and site visits.

Lineage

The Tweed and Brunswick river catchments were selected for the study and uses Greens (1997) wetland classification system. This system classifies wetlands into the following: coastal floodplain forest; coastal floodplain swamp; mangrove and salt swamp; dunal swamp and lagoon; estuarine lake and lagoon; upland swamp and upland lake and lagoons.

The inventory was compiled by Kieran Lenehan as part of a Masters of Science research project undertaked at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

The maps in the inventory were produced using Arcview and the bulk of the data was extracted from the Tweed/Brunswick Multi Attribute data mapped by DLWC (Short and Hamilton, 1994 - 1998). This dataset is a land resources inventory created using 1:25 000 scale colour aerial photography and extensive field checking. Other spatial and cadastral features were obtained from DLWC. ; The Tweed catchment has an area of 1303 sq km and wetlands account for 2.95% (38.5sq km) of the catchment. The Brunswick catchment has an area of 492 sq km with wetlands accounting for 7.29% (35.9 sq km) of that catchment. The dominant wetland type is coastal floodplain forest, these account for 51.5% (38.6 sq km) of the total wetlands in the catchments and 2.14% of the study area.Metadata imported.C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Metadata\ANZMeta\Thesaurus\temp.xml2005052712171400

DQ Absolute External Positional Accuracy

Effective date

1900-01-01

Explanation

The accuracy of the multi attribute data was was compared to any previous datasets (all be it limited) of the wetlands. Truthing was conducted on about 75% of the wetlands mapped in the study. ; ; The estimated positional accuracy of map polygons is within 12.5 and up to 75m, depending upon the intensity of pre existing locational reference data (such as contours, cadastre, etc).

DQ Non Quantitative Attribute Correctness

Effective date

1900-01-01

Explanation

The multi attribute data was interpreted by Landscape Assessment Unit staff from aerial photography and field verification. Standard edge matching procedures were carried out on all tile joins for polygon attributes.
