Abstract |
Nearshore reef extent was classified for the NSW coast using best-available high resolution aerial imagery. Statewide mapping of nearshore reef extent was performed from 2010 to 2017 along the entire NSW coastline using aerial imagery from governmental and commercial bodies. An understanding of the spatial extent and distribution of coastal habitats contributes critical baseline information to inform decision-making and strategic planning processes. |

Lineage |
Nearshore reef mapping was undertaken from 2010-2017 along the entire NSW coast. Features visible within the nearshore zone were digitised from a broad suite of high resolution aerial imagery in ArcMap v.10.1. Aerial imagery was sourced from NSW Land and Property Information as well as the commercial entities Nearmap™ and Google Earth™ (Table 1, Appendix 2). Ten feature classes were defined, with six categories for submerged features including: rocky reef, sand veneer/bare reef, sand, seagrass, pipelines and shipwrecks (Table 2). Land features, including beach sands and gravels, were digitised at a coarser scale as these were not the focus habitat for this study. |

The layers were cleaned and smoothed in ET Geowizards toolbox and the GIS package ArcInfo was used to do a topological consistency check to detect and correct flaws in the spatial data structure. |

The most commonly employed scale of map digitisation was a map scale of 1:2,000, with a minimum mapping unit of 0.7 m2. Due to the variability in sediment movement, precise reef boundaries can be variable over time. |

The method of feature classification involved preliminary classification with confidence categories assigned (low/medium/high). Low confidence areas re-assessed for inclusion or exclusion. This dataset represents maximum reef extent visible through the available imagery, with no groundtruthing undertaken. Reef extent was digitised from multiple sources across multiple dates, and in this manner caution must be taken when interpreting trends between mapped regions. Future applications of this dataset must appropriately consider the caveats of the dataset and assess whether the layer is fit for purpose. |
