Naturally Occurring Asbestos |
Abstract |
Areas within NSW where naturally occurring asbestos has been found, or has the potential to be found within 10 metres of the surface. The areas are based on the existing 1:250,000 geological mapping with additional use of 1:25 000 lithological mapping in the Broken Hill area. The datasets also include point data information on sites where naturally occurring asbestos has been found, and petrographic information on asbestos and its host rocks. The different dataset layers can be switched on or off (and their transparency adjusted) by clicking the 'Layers' icon at the bottom of the screen. Clicking on a polygon or point will return more detailed attribute information. The map has been restricted to only zoom to approximately 1:80,000, reflecting the maximum accuracy of the underlying mapping data. The dataset includes 35 sites where asbestos has been identified as a commodity, and 65 sites were identified as from MetIndex from the MetIndex database where possible asbestos-type minerals have been recorded and are likely to be asbestiform. Two main assessments were undertaken to select areas with the potential for NOA to occur: 1) a first-pass assessment based on spatial queries on lithological fields and 2) A more detailed assessment based on detailed information from GSNSW maps and their attendant explanatory notes, the scientific literature and theses. The mapping was almost entirely based on the existing mapped geological polygons. |
