Abstract

This study involved mapping changes in forest extent, structure, condition and floristics using three sets of historical aerial photography (1945, 1970 and 1991). Comparisons were made between these years and also with the forest structure results obtained from the same methodology implemented by OEH (Bowen et al, 2011). The most significant advances in River Red Gum extent were seen to have taken place between 1970 and 1991.

Please note that 3 separate vegetation datasets were produced: MoiraGrassPlains_1945_E_4190 MoiraGrassPlains_1970_E_4191 MoiraGrassPlains_1991_E_4192

Lineage

The attributed linework produced by Bowen et al (2011)* was draped over the DEM, converting the 2D shapefile to a 3D shapefile. This was displayed and edited in 3D over the 1991 imagery. The new 1991 layer was then interpreted over the 1970 imagery to produce the 1970 layer, which was then interpreted over the 1945 imagery to produce the 1945 layer. * See Bowen et al (2011). Riverina Red Gum Reserves Mapping Program - Stage 1. NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (Draft Report).
