Alternative title(s)

Oxley Wild Rivers Dry Rainforest Extent

Abstract

This layer consists of simple extent polygons of Dry Rainforest patches within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, Oxley Wild Rivers State Conservation Area as well as parts of Carrai, Cunnawarra, Werrikimbe and Willi Willi National Parks in the Macleay Gorges near Armidale, NSW.

The purpose of this project was to further develop Dry Rainforest fire management techniques in preparation of the fire management plan for Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. The project refined a number of databases and rainforest susceptibility models previously developed for the Dry Rainforest communities of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park and provided technical input into the incorporation of the prescriptions into the Fire Management Plan for the same Reserve.

Lineage

The following tasks that were undertaken:

  1. Generate a fire management map at 1:100000 scale for use in ongoing planning work to include current service estate boundaries and those of acquired but not gazetted blocks, rainforest patches, firetrails and roads etc, major watercourses, rock outcrops and cliffs.

  2. Generate overlays at 1:25000 scale of current rainforest patch distribution

  3. Analyse the fuel data collected by Lachlan Copeland and determine fuel accumulation curves for forest types utilising a stratification grouping procedure. Identify any gaps in the fuel sampling program.

  4. Develop stratification for fuel sampling project for Werrikimbe National Park based on stratification procedures developed for Oxley WRNP and ensuring compatibility of projects.

  5. Utilising current model format for Fire Management Plans and using the Crowdy Bay National Park Fire Management Plan and the Willi Willi National Park Draft Fire Management Plan as guides, make recommendations and provide draft text, maps and diagrams to incorporate the Dry Rainforest Fire Management Strategies and Fuel Sampling data into the Draft Fire Management Plan for Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.

6 Utilising existing GIS coverage and in consultation with Armidale District staff prepare a boundary access map for Oxley Wild Rivers National Park classifying the entire Park boundary into one of the following categories:

• Access Trail on Park (within 200m of Park boundary) • Access Trail on adjoining land (within 200m of Park boundary) • Access on both sides of Park boundary (within 200m of Park boundary) • Vehicle Access Route on Park • Vehicle Access Route off Park (including access through private property) • No Vehicle Access along Boundary Access routes and boundary access trails that are independent of identifiable roads or trails are linked to identifiable roads or trails by actual routes.

Work was undertaken in the Armidale Office by Kellie Mantle utilising NPWS equipment, resources and materials .
