Title

Bongil Bongil NP Forestry History

Abstract

The dataset is a historically compiled spatial history of forestry activities for the ex-Pine Creek State Forest, most of which has now been gazetted as Bongil Bongil NP. Logging and silvicultural treatments are documented as far back as 1940. Individual contributions, imagery and documents were used to derive the layer.

Lineage

The dataset of Bongil Bongil National Park forestry history is in digital spatial format and compiled from a variety of sources. Bongil Bongil NP was gazetted in 1995 from most of the then Pine Creek State Forest. Subsequent gazettal continued until 1996. The main source of information was the report titled "A Brief History of Forestry Management at Pine Creek" that was commissioned for NSW State Forests in 1996 by R.L. Newman and Partners PTY. LTD. This report contained 50 compartment maps of the then Pine Creek State Forest and descriptions of logging and treatment events from 1940 to 1995. These maps were never captured spatially into GIS other than a compartment boundary supplied by Forest NSW (DPI). The subdivision of each compartment shown in the report were visually transferred 'on-screen' aided by aerial photography (1993), SPOT 5 satellite imagery (NSW DECC, 2005) and high resolution (22cm) digital aerial photography from Coffs Harbour City Council (1997). Individual compartment tabular information at times seemed to conflict with hardcopy maps but best efforts were made to reconcile any conflicts and provide as much detail from the report as possible. Outside of the report scope, personal accounts and vegetation mapping datasets were used. Martin Smith (Ranger - Bongil Bongil NP), John Turbill (NSW DECC) and Loyd Foster (Coffs-Orara Landcare) were all consulted re their knowledge of the Bongil Bongil area. Vegetation mapping datasets that highlighted plantations were: 1- NSW State Forest RN17 Types. 2 - CRAFTI (2001) Mapping by NSW DECC 3 - Coffs Harbour City Council Vegetation Mapping (1996).

DQ Completeness Commission

Effective date

2001-01-01

Explanation

No systematic test performed The spatial coverage is complete for Bongil Bongil NP. The coverage extends beyond Bongil Bongil NP where Pine Creek SF compartments 1 through to 50 exist.

DQ Completeness Omission

Effective date

2001-01-01

Explanation

No systematic test performed The spatial coverage is complete for Bongil Bongil NP. The coverage extends beyond Bongil Bongil NP where Pine Creek SF compartments 1 through to 50 exist.

DQ Conceptual Consistency

Effective date

1900-01-01

Explanation

No systematic test performed The layer is topologically correct. ie no overlapping polygons and all polygons edges snapped to each other. Also, each polygon has attributes.

DQ Absolute External Positional Accuracy

Effective date

1900-01-01

Explanation

DQ Non Quantitative Attribute Correctness

Effective date

1900-01-01

Explanation

No systematic test performed Most attributes were derived directly from the report titled "A Brief History of Forestry Management at Pine Creek" . These attributes were transferred to the spatial layer from two sources; a table and a hardcopy map. Other logging events that ocurred after the report were added from discussions with John Murray from Forests NSW (DPI). John transcribed these events onto hardcopy maps and then they were transferred to the spatial layer. Attributes for areas outside the ex-Pine Creek SF are less detailed and derived only from aerial photgraph interpretation. These areas are where APM (Australian Paper Manufacturers) purchased freehold land for plantations. Less is known about these activities so attribute information is less detailed than ex-Pine Creek SF areas.
