Abstract |
Bluff River Nature Reserve vegetation mapping was undertaken by Dr John T. Hunter in 2002 by contract for the NPWS Northern Tableland Region. It is described in the Vegetation and Floristics of the Tenterfield Nature Reserves report which includes Bluff River, Bolivia Hill, Curry’s Gap, Gibraltar & Mt McKenzie. All reserves lie north of Glenn Innes and south of Tenterfield on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales and the New England Tablelands Bioregion. The local government regions for all reserves are the Tenterfield Shire and the County of Clive. Bluff River NR is located approximately 35 km north of Deepwater and incorporates 1793 ha. The vegetation of five reserves within the Tenterfield area is described and mapped (scale 1:50 000). Fifteen communities are defined based on PATN analysis and an additional community is mapped based on information derived from previous investigations. These fifteen communities were mapped based on ground truthing, air photo interpretation and landform. Seven communities are considered of conservation importance with two of which were considered endangered and one should be considered vulnerable. Most communities are of woodland structure, although sedgelands, heaths, grasslands, open forests and tall open forests also occur. Many of the communities show considerable variation and intergrade along common boundaries and in particular on intermediate soil types. Physiography was the major correlative influence on community distribution, however protection from the north west and east, time since fire, grazing and geographic locality were also strongly correlated. This survey of the vegetation of the Tenterfield Nature Reserves (Bluff River, Bolivia Hill, Curry’s Gap, Gibraltar & Mt McKenzie) was prepared by Dr John T. Hunter at the request of the Glen Innes Area of the Northern Tablelands Region. The requirement was that existing information from previous floristic surveys are collated and that up to 135 stratified sites be surveyed in order to complete a comprehensive survey of the vegetation and flora of Bluff River, Bolivia Hill, Curry’s Gap, Gibraltar and Mt McKenzie Nature Reserves. The report represents the findings of this survey. The collated information is to be used as a guide for management purposes. The requirements of the investigation were: 1. Collate existing information from previous vegetation surveys conducted within the Nature Reserves. Data sources recovered included full floristic sites from: • Checklist of species found within the Bolivia Hill Rail Easement (Hunter 2000). • 22 sites conducted for the floristic inventory of the granitic outcrop vegetation of the New England Batholith (Hunter 1999) • Backwater & Bolivia Multispecies Recovery Plan (Hunter unpublished report) • Targeted survey for Pimelea venosa at Bluff River and Bolivia Hill (Hunter & Earl 1999). • Checklist of species at Bolivia Hill (Williams 1968) • Survey results from the targeted survey for Boronia boliviensis (Moresley & Falconer 1999) 2. Site placement to be based on selected environmental variables and be distributed based on the area they occupy. 3. Identify weed species and their occurrence. 4. Identify ROTAP and TSC Act species and their occurrence. 5. Identify regionally significant species. 6. Provide known fire ecology information on species and communities. 7. Construction of a vegetation map based on communities as defined by PATN analysis. 8. Provide management recommendations. 9. Collection of voucher specimens for reference. |
