Abstract

This study reviews the distribution of healthy bladder saltbush on the Riverine Plain of south-east Australia towards the end of 1986, as well as the characteristics of regeneration following the saltbush dieback of 1977-83. The area of bladder saltbush increased by 53 percent, from 0.53 to 0.81 million ha, in the period 1983-86. A further 0.32 million ha, which previously supported saltbush, failed to regenerate. Variations in the pattern and progress of regeneration were closely related to variations in soil type and the effects of pre- and post-dieback grazing. Although the cause of dieback remains unknown, it would appear that much of the decline in the distribution of bladder saltbush could be attributed to post-dieback mismanagement of affected stands. The dataset consists of the report and one map showing bladder saltbush regeneration 1987. This dataset is related to the Bladder Saltbush Dieback dataset. VIS_ID 4119, 4120 and 4121

Lineage

The study was achieved by questionnaire survey of all graziers, on the Riverine Plain, identified with saltbush holdings affected by dieback from the previous study by Clift et al (1987). The study covers the Riverine Plain of NSW Division 1 - saltbush holdings west of the Lachlan River on the Riverine Plain. Division 2 - saltbush holdings on the Riverine Plain bounded by the Lachlan River and the Murrumbidgee River. Division 3 - saltbush holdings on the Riverine Plain south of the Murrumbidgee River. 212 landholders were surveyed covering 250 contiguous leases. Over 80% of the questionaries were completed. The survey consisted of questions relating to the extent and nature of regeneration (effect of factors such as soil type, rainfall, seed availability, grazing and insect activity) and a series of three property plans. The distribution of saltbush was mapped on an individual holding basis at a field mapping scale of 1:250,000. Each survey consisted of three outline plans of the property: 1. the pre-dieback (mid 1970's) distribution, 2. the dieback (1983) occurrence and 3. a blank plan on which to show present healthy stand (1986-87) distribution. The property boundary was traced from standard 1:250,000 map tiles. The linework returned by the landholders was then transferred back onto standard 1:250,000 map tiles. Most linework was supplied at 0.25 to 0.5 mm thickness, representing a linear range of 62.5 to 125 m. Units as small as 20 ha were identified and annotated on the plans. Properties were visited in February/March to complete and discuss the questionnaire. The 8 map tiles were pasted together into a mosaic and covered in clear plastic. Digital capture of the map was undertaken in 2000 by hand digitising of the base maps using GIS.
