ALOS Woody biomass (50m) 2009

This raster represents the above ground vegetation biomass at 50m resolution. It is based on radar imagery from the Palsar instrument on the Japanese ALOS satellite, and is calibrated to field measurements of biomass. It is used for carbon accounting, vegetation mapping and modelling applications

Purpose This is a research grade product generated using L-band radar imagery from ALOS PALSAR. The model was calibrated using field plot measurements of tree diameters from which above ground biomass (AGB) was estimated using allometric equations. Empirical relationships were established between HH and HV backscatter and AGB. The study also explored the impact of surface moisture conditions on biomass retrieval using L-band radar. The full method is published in Lucas et al. (2010). The product is unvalidated but may be useful for woody vegetation change monitoring and carbon accounting applications.
