Abstract

Vegetation map of Conimbla National Park. Vegetation descriptions from Boden, R. & Mitchell, L. (1996).

The NSW NPWS commissioned vegetation surveys of Winburndale NR and Nangar, Conimbla and Weddin Mountains NPs, as the first stage in preparing fire management plans. Key project tasks were literature review to compile an annotated bibliography, and vegetation surveys to describe communities, their floristic composition and conservation status.

Mapping produced by Boden & Mitchell was deemed insufficient for reserve management needs. Subsequently, more detailed mapping (this dataset) was undertaken by Roger Lembit under contract to NPWS Bathurst District office in 1997.

Lineage

The NSW NPWS commissioned vegetation surveys of Winburndale NR and Nangar, Conimbla and Weddin Mountains NPs, as the first stage in preparing fire management plans. Key project tasks were literature review to compile an annotated bibliography, and vegetation surveys to describe communities, their floristic composition and conservation status. Floristic Classification derived from quantitative analysis of floristic plots. Vegetation patterns on the original Boden & Mitchell (1996) map were established from previous available information (NPWS, DLWC, SF, Local councils), field surveys and statistical analysis.

Mapping produced by Boden & Mitchell was deemed insufficient for reserve management needs. Subsequently, more detailed mapping (this dataset) was undertaken by Roger Lembit under contract to NPWS Bathurst District office in 1997. Preliminary identification of vegetation communities was undertaken by stereoscopic interpretation of colour and textural differences evident on aerial photographs. Overlays for aerial photographs were marked to display vegetation polygons and annotated with codes identifying vegetation communities described in the Bathurst District Vegetation Survey report (Boden & Mitchell 1996). The preliminary map of polygons was ground truthed using floristic data from the 1995/96 surveys and the final vegetation polygons were transferred to hardcopy 1:50 000 topographical maps. Polygons were digitised by NPWS staff using the ERMS GIS package.
